Dear Coos Bay Schools Families and Community,
The latest case numbers from last week are out and Coos County has seen a decrease in cases from the previous two-week look back. Last week our two-week look back number was 79 new cases. This week it has dropped to 57. We will be watching closely the impact of the holiday weekend as we have seen increases coming off previous holidays. At this time, we do not have cases impacting our schools.
I recently had a meeting with the Oregon Department of Education where they shared a draft of new guidance for the next school year. They are allowing Superintendent’s input until June 11 and then they will release a list of required actions by June 25th, with the final guidance scheduled for release July 22. We are all dedicated to starting the 2021-22 school year in a full-time model, similar to where we were prior to COVID. Within the new guidance, there will be up-to-date safety protocols, similar to some that we put into practice this year. ODE will be working closely with CDC, OSHA, and OHA to develop those required protocols for next Fall. In addition to full-time in-person school for our students, we will still offer an online at-home option for those that want it.
We will be working hard this summer planning for the opening of the 2021-22 school year. I will keep you all posted on new information as I receive it.
