Welcome to Millicoma!

Millicoma Intermediate SchoolHome of the Mustangs!

Where we are building strong minds, strong hearts, and a strong learning community every day! Millicoma serves 4th through 7th grade students in the Coos Bay Public Schools. We are committed to creating a safe, caring, collaborative learning community where student achievement is first and foremost. Classrooms grades 4-6 are self-contained, giving us the delightful atmosphere of an elementary school, while the 7th grade classrooms are content-based. While striving to maintain the innocence of our 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 year old children, we work very hard at helping those same children develop the skills they need in order to make a smooth transition into the high school. Helping our students become safe, respectful, responsible citizens is a daily occurrence at Millicoma School. Our partnership with parents and the community is vital in meeting these needs.

Excellence in Education Award Nominees Sought

The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce believes that great education and a great economy go hand in hand. Thriving businesses support a healthy education and graduates who are work or college ready in turn support our local businesses and community. It is our goal to build bridges between business and education throughout the Bay Area. To that end, we are looking for nominations for three Educator Awards which are handed out annually:

Innovation in Teaching is for educators that are on the cutting edge and may form exciting community or business partnerships or utilize technology to improve learning.

Contributor to Education is for educators who contribute to the learning of students by their tireless efforts, time and dedication.

Unsung Hero is for educators recognized for their dedication to making sure students graduate. Regardless of their titles, they are all heroes to the students they help reach the goals of diploma or degree.

From these three honorees a Bay Area Educator of the Year is selected and will be honored at the annual Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet the last Saturday in January. The two runners up will be recognized at our monthly luncheons following the banquet.

This is a great way to recognize that individual educator that has made a difference in a student’s life. Anyone can make a nomination and nominations can be made any time during the year but the deadline for submission is November 30th. The form is accessible online at www.oregonsbayarea.org or you can click here. Contact the Chamber office at 541-266-0868 for more information.

Volunteer Trainings

Coos Bay School District is offering School Volunteer Trainings on September 18th and 25th. The training is free and open to the public. You’ll learn what volunteers need to know to help in the classroom, cafeteria, office and playground. Free breakfast or dinner is provided with your registration and there is limited childcare available.

The September 18th training will be at Madison Elementary School in the Gym and the September 25th training will be at Blossoms Gulch Elementary School in the Cafeteria. Both will have sessions from 8:00 – 10:00 AM and 5:30 – 7:30 PM.

If you haven’t signed up to volunteer for the 2014-15 school year, go to http://cbd9.net/human-resources/volunteers. The more volunteers involved in our schools, the better the students do.

To register or for more information, please call 541-888-1588. Your registration will give us a headcount for the meals and childcare. Click here for flyer: Volunteer Orientation Flyer

This training is provided in collaboration with Pathways to Positive Parenting, OSU Open Campus and Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Volunteer Cafe’s for Parents and Community Members

Please join us for brief volunteer trainings and information once a month in the teacher’s lounge at either Blossom Gulch or Madison Elementary Schools. This is a great time to learn about new volunteer opportunities and to meet other parents and volunteers.

If you are involved in another school in our district, you are still welcome to attend. Hope to see you there! Blossom Gulch – 1st Monday of each month, 8:00 – 9:00 AM in the teacher’s lounge. Madison Elementary – 2nd Thursday of each month, 8:00 – 9:00 AM in the teacher’s lounge.

If you haven’t signed up to volunteer, go to http://cbd9.net/human-resources/volunteers

Here is the link to the 2014 Volunteer Handbook which has helpful tips and guidelines for volunteering.

Attendance Calling

The district office would like to give you an update on the automated attendance service. It has been activated and is programmed to call the primary number listed for the student whenever they have an unexcused absence. If you know your student is going to be absent, please contact the office before 8:30 AM to excuse the absence or send a note with your student when they return to school. If you call after the cut-off time, you will still receive the automated call.

If you would like to change the number that is called or remove a number, please contact the school office and they will be happy to make the change for you.
