Superintendent's Newsletter

November 6, 2026
welcome November
As we move into November, I want to take a moment to celebrate the great things happening throughout the Coos Bay School District. October was a busy and productive month, filled with opportunities for students to learn, grow, and connect with their schools and families.

Across our K–6 schools, October marked the beginning of targeted intervention and enrichment opportunities, ensuring that students receive the additional support or academic challenges they need to be successful. Our elementary schools also welcomed families for fall conferences, providing valuable opportunities for teachers and parents to connect, celebrate student progress, and work together to support learning.

Throughout the month, our schools continued recognizing and celebrating positive attendance and student behavior, reinforcing the importance of showing up, being engaged, and making good choices.

At the secondary level, our students participated in a districtwide Day of Testing, with opportunities to complete the Pre-ACT, ACT WorkKeys, ASVAB, and ACT. Students also participated in the PSAT and SAT. These assessments provide valuable information about academic readiness while helping students explore their interests and prepare for opportunities beyond high school. They also support our Coos Bay Promise that every student graduates with a plan to be enrolled, employed, or enlisted.

Looking ahead, our grades 7–12 schools will host fall family conferences on November 10 and 12. I encourage families to take advantage of these opportunities to connect with teachers, discuss student progress, and work together to support a successful school year.

As we enter this season of gratitude, I want to thank our students, staff, families, and community for their continued commitment to our schools. Every day, we see examples of what is possible when we work together with a shared purpose.
One Compass, One Crew, One Mission is more than a motto. It is our commitment to knowing every student by name, strength, and need, providing opportunities for every student to succeed, and ensuring that all students graduate with a plan.

Together, we are building on our progress, celebrating our students, and creating opportunities for every child to succeed.

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich history, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native American peoples.

Here in the Coos Bay area, we are fortunate to have deep connections to the Coquille Indian Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians. These Tribes have called this region home since time immemorial and continue to play an important role in the cultural heritage and future of our community.

As a school district, we recognize the importance of honoring their histories, celebrating their living cultures, and helping our students develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the Native peoples whose ancestral homelands include the lands on which we live, learn, and work.

I also want to extend a special thank you to the Marshfield High School Native Club for its efforts to promote cultural heritage, celebrate Native American traditions, and share cultural awareness throughout our schools and community. Their leadership and commitment help strengthen our school community and remind us of the importance of honoring and celebrating the diverse cultures that make Coos Bay such a special place.

Honoring Our Veterans

On November 11, we pause to honor and thank the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is an opportunity to recognize their courage, dedication, and willingness to sacrifice in service to our country. Within the Coos Bay School District, we are fortunate to have veterans who continue to serve our community through their work in education and their support of our schools. Every Day Matters

Attendance in 2026–2027

As we move into November, we are encouraged by the improvement in student attendance across the Coos Bay School District. After experiencing an outbreak of illness during the first few weeks of school, we are seeing more students returning to classrooms and attending school consistently. This is a positive step forward, and we appreciate the efforts of our students, families, and staff to make attendance a priority.

Currently, 85.5% of our students districtwide are attending school at least 80% of the time. We are especially encouraged by attendance in our elementary schools, where 88.4% of our K–2 students and 90.2% of our students in grades 3–6 are meeting this mark. At the secondary level, 83.8% of students in grades 7–8 and 79.8% of students in grades 9–12 are attending at least 80% of the time.

These numbers are encouraging and show that the vast majority of our students are attending school for most of their scheduled days. However, our goal is for every student to attend at least 90% of the school year, which is the standard for regular attendance in Oregon. Attending 80% of the time is a positive starting point for students working to improve their attendance, but we know that every additional day in the classroom makes a difference.

Attendance is especially important in the early elementary years, when students are building the foundational reading, mathematics, and learning skills that support future success. At every grade level, consistent attendance helps students stay connected to their teachers, classmates, and school community while keeping up with classroom instruction.

We also recognize that illness and other circumstances can sometimes make attendance challenging. Our focus is on encouraging positive attendance habits, celebrating improvement, and partnering with families to help students attend school as consistently as possible.

Every Student. Every Day. Each day in school is another opportunity to learn, grow, and build toward a successful future. Thank you to our families for helping us make attendance a priority!

ODE Firearm Safety

School Safety and Security

In the wake of the tragic events at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, we are reminded of the importance of maintaining safe and supportive learning environments for all students and staff. Our hearts continue to be with the students, families, educators, and entire Bend community.

At Coos Bay School District, student and staff safety remains one of our highest priorities. We continue to review and strengthen our emergency preparedness procedures, safety protocols, and partnerships with local law enforcement and community agencies.

As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, we want to share a resource developed by the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority that provides families with practical information about firearm safety and preventing firearm-related injuries.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to ensure our schools remain safe, welcoming places for every student to learn and grow.
