Superintendent's Newsletter

We have officially reached the month of May, with just 27 days of school remaining in the year. This is a critical and exciting time across our district, as students are working hard to maximize their performance on state assessments, AP exams, and end-of-year evaluations.
This is the stretch where focus matters most. We encourage both our students and staff to stay engaged, make the most of each day of learning, and continue striving for growth and improvement.
As Superintendent, I always look forward to this time of year, and as a former coach, I naturally see this season through a competitive lens. End-of-year results serve as our scoreboard—highlighting our successes while also showing us where we can continue to improve. It’s an opportunity to celebrate progress and to reflect on how we can get even better moving forward.

Community Engagement and Feedback |
We’ve had such a blast connecting during our recent outreach—a huge thank you to everyone who has already participated and shared their thoughts. Your feedback is vital as we shape the future of Coos Bay Public Schools.
To keep the momentum going, I’m hosting a series of both morning and evening sessions this spring. Whether you prefer a casual chat over coffee or a dedicated townhall discussion, I want to hear from you regarding student success, academics, and what’s next for our district.

Certified Staff Appreciation Week
|
May 4–8 marks Certified Appreciation Week, when we recognize the educators and licensed professionals who support learning across our schools.
Every day, our certified staff bring skill, care, and persistence to their work with students. Even as education continues to face challenges—from funding uncertainties to evolving expectations—they remain focused on helping each student learn, grow, and succeed. Their commitment to refining their practice and supporting students is a cornerstone of the progress we see across our district.
We are fortunate to have such dedicated educators serving Coos Bay. The positive influence they have on students—and on our broader community—is lasting and meaningful.
If you have the chance this week, I encourage you to share a quick note or word of thanks with a staff member who has made a difference in your child’s experience. Small gestures of appreciation truly matter.

May has continued to show encouraging signs as we rebound from the illness patterns of the winter months. Currently, our regular attendance rate at Coos Bay Schools is 64%. A regular attender is defined as a student who attends 90% or more of the school year. The State of Oregon, through the Oregon Department of Education, has set a goal for 90% of students statewide to meet this benchmark.
We remain hopeful that our attendance rate will surpass last year’s and that our recovery from the pandemic will continue to progress. As we enter the final six weeks of school, we encourage all families to make attendance a top priority. Every day matters; not only for your child’s learning, but also for the overall success of our district.
Regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic achievement and long-term success after graduation. Thank you for your continued support in helping our students finish the year strong.

Stu McCann and Glen Crook recently had the opportunity to accompany our students to the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference—an outstanding event that highlights the very best of career and technical education across Oregon. SkillsUSA, a national Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO), brings together students, educators, and industry partners with a shared commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce.
This year’s conference featured participants from schools of all sizes and regions, competing in more than 100 technical and leadership events. Our students rose to the occasion, representing our school with exceptional integrity, professionalism, and talent. We are especially proud of the students who earned honors at the conference, demonstrating a high level of skill and dedication in their respective events. Their accomplishments reflect not only their individual commitment, but also the strength of our Career and Technical Education programs.
We are grateful to Mr. McCann and Mr. Crook for their leadership and support in providing this valuable experience, and we commend all of our participants for representing our district with pride.

Madison, Sunset, Eastside and Millicoma had the opportunity to each host Rhys Thomas of Science Circus in April. He performed a comedy show that taught the Physics of juggling and acrobalance tricks. He did this by juggling a variety of objects from bean bags to bowling balls. He even juggled while riding a 6 foot tall unicycle. Students watched in awe as he swung trays of water without spilling any and spun 5 bowls on thin sticks as he pulled the tablecloth from the table all while explaining the scientific principles behind it. Mr. Thomas has performed everywhere from Abu Dhabi to the Smithsonian and we were lucky enough to have him visit the K-6 schools in our district.
In addition to the assembly, students at Sunset School participated in a Science Literacy night that included a book fair, SWOCC Planetarium, Dinosaur Exhibit, and OMSI activities.
